Roluos & Angkor Tour – 4 Days

Destination: Siem Reap
Duration: 4 days + 3 nights
Accommodation: 4 star hotel of your choice

The town of Roluos served as the capital of Indravarman I, who reigned between 877 – 889. Today, it is both a town and an archeological site which lies about 13 kilometres east of Siem Reap. Its monuments  are among the earliest large, permanent temples built by the Khmers and mark the beginning of Khmer classical art.

Between the 9th and 15th centuries, the Khmer Empire produced some of the world’s most magnificent architectural masterpieces in Angkor. Today, these works – 1,000 temples in total – comprise magnificent ruins that lay in various stages of preservation – some mysteriously jutting out through the forest, and others out in plain view such as the  fabulous Angkor Wat.

Explore the archaeological treasures of Roluos and Angkor on this 4-day Roluos Angkor tour which commences at the ancient town of Roluos, winds through the mysterious temples of Angkor, and culminates at Banteay Srei, which is regarded as the jewel in the crown of Classical Khmer Art. Continue onto Banteay Samre, one of the most complete complexes at Angkor’s famous Angkor Wat. You’ll also get a chance to visit the floating village of Chong Khneas and take a traditional wooden boat ride on one of the largest lakes in Asia.

Day 1: Siem Reap Arrival – Roluos Group Temples – Angkor

Your driver and guide will meet you at Siem Reap International Airport and transfer you to your hotel for check-in. Then, you will be driven to the Roluos Group temples where you will see Preah Ko, erected by Indravarman I in the late 9th century and dedicated to his ancestors; Bakong, the largest of the Roluos temples with its active Buddhist monastery just to the north of the east entrance; and Lolei, built by Yasovarman I, the founder of the first city at Angkor, on an islet in the center of a large reservoir which is now rice fields.

Lunch at the local restaurant and continue your temple tour as you journey onto Angkor. See the unique interior brick sculptures of Prasat Kravan; the Srah Srang Reservoir (also known as “The Royal Baths” as it was once used for ritual bathing); Banteay Kdei, which is surrounded by four concentric walls; and Eastern Mebon and its guardian elephants – some of which remain fairly well preserved.

In the evening, enjoy the sunset at Pre Rup, followed by dinner at the local restaurant. Then, retire to your hotel room and unwind as you prepare for tomorrow’s adventure.

Meals: Lunch and dinner

Day 2: Angkor

After breakfast at your hotel, your driver and guide will pick you up and take you to Angkor Wat – the most famous of all the temples on the plain of Angkor. The temple complex covers 81 hectares and is comparable in size to the Imperial Palace in Beijing. The temple was built in the12th century and is considered a masterpiece – a prime example of classical Khmer art and architecture.

Lunch at the local restaurant, then visit the South Gate with its huge statues depicting the churning of the ocean of milk, the ancient capital of Angkor Thom, the Bayon Temple (unique for its 54 towers decorated with over 200 smiling faces of Avolokitesvara), the Royal Enclosure, Phimeanakas, the Elephants Terrace and the Terrace of the Leper King.

In the evening, enjoy the sunset at Angkor Wat, followed by dinner at the local restaurant. Then, retire to your hotel room and unwind as you prepare for tomorrow’s adventure.

Day 3:  Angkor

Awake before dawn – your driver and guide will be waiting to pick you up and take you to Angkor to watch the sunrise from Phnom Bakheng, one of two hills dominating the plain of Angkor. From here, you will have a spectacular view of the Western Baray and Angkor Wat.

Return to your hotel for breakfast. Then, return to Angkor and visit the Banteay Srei temple, regarded as the jewel in the crown of Classical Khmer Art. Continue to Ta Prohm, one of the area’s most beautiful temples. Ta Prohm has been relatively untouched since it was discovered and retains much of its mystery.

Lunch at the local restaurant and continue exploring Angkor as you visit Preah Khan, which was built by the King Jayavarman VII. Preah Khan is, like Ta Prohm, a place of towered enclosures and shoulder hugging corridors. Next, visit Neak Pean, a fountain built in the middle of a pool representing the paradisiacal Himalayan mountain-lake; Ta Som and Banteay Samre, built in the third quarter of the 12th century and consisting of a central temple with four wings preceded by a hall and accompanied by two libraries, the southern one remarkably well preserved.

Enjoy dinner at the local restaurant. Then, retire to your hotel room and unwind as you prepare for tomorrow’s adventure.
